Exciting breakthrough for global child health and public immunization programs! 🌍💉A new study led by the Wits Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit (Wits VIDA) has provided groundbreaking evidence that a reduced-dose "1+1" vaccination schedule for the PCV13 vaccine sustains strong immune protection in children through five years of age. This is the first trial to evaluate long-term antibody persistence up to age five under a reduced-dose regimen. The findings show that a single infant priming dose combined with a timely booster offers protection comparable to the standard, multi-dose series. Why this matters for global health:👉 Lasting Protection: Children maintain robust immunity throughout early childhood.👉 Cost & Resource Efficiency: Fewer primary doses mean lower procurement and administration costs, easing the pressure on busy routine immunization schedules.👉 Future Sustainability: Savings can help low- and middle-income countries create fiscal space to introduce newer, broader-coverage vaccines. This research successfully addresses a critical global data gap previously highlighted by the World Health Organization.
