Scientists hard at work! In the top image Medical Scientist, Lara Van Der Merwe is holding a Fluidigm plate. These plates allow our scientists to screen 90 samples against 115 different targets simultaneously. The reaction set allows us to serotype Streptococcus pneumoniae (detect 94 serotypes) and to also detect and quantify common viral and bacterial pathogens - it is the most comprehensive high-throughput quantitative molecular serotyping reaction set developed to date and it was optimised and validated here at Wits VIDA! The assay is used to monitor nasopharyngeal carriage in both urban and rural communities in South Africa and to serotype pneumococcus in a cohort of children that received alternate doses of the Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). Congratulations to VIDA Ph.D. Research Fellow in Vaccinology, William McMahon on winning the Best Student Oral Presentation in Clinical Sciences and Therapeutics for Health at this year's Wits - University of the Witwatersrand Faculty of Health Sciences Research Day!"My presentation focussed on T cell responses induced by the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222) vaccine in response to wild-type SARS-CoV-2 (ancestral virus) among people living with and without HIV in South Africa. Results presented (although not yet published) belong to a sub-study allocated to my Ph.D. research project in Vaccinology which broadly aims to investigate cell-mediated immunity induced by Covid-19 vaccines and SARS-CoV-2 infection. This sub-study forms part of the main Covid-19 vaccine trial (COV005) conducted at Wits VIDA which assessed the safety and immunogenicity of AZD1222 in people living with and without HIV in South Africa.
