Dr Marta C. Nunes is a reader and associate Professor at the Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit of the University of the Witwatersrand. Marta developed her PhD thesis work in Professor S Goldman’s laboratory at the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience, Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York, USA and obtained her PhD from the University of Lisbon, Medical College, Lisbon, Portugal in January 2004. During her PhD training she isolated and described a very unique multipotential neural progenitor cell population from the subcortical white matter of the adult human brain. At the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, during her EMBO and Human Frontiers post-doctoral fellowships, Marta was involved in several projects dedicated to identifying new malaria vaccine candidates for pregnancy malaria. And after her post-doctoral training at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France in 2009 (where she developed different projects aimed at understanding the cell biology of Plasmodium falciparum and to identify molecular candidates for malaria vaccines for pregnant women) Marta moved to South Africa. The focus of her research with Wits VIDA has been on the interaction of different putative pathogens on respiratory disease in children and the different manifestations in health and disease to these infections. To approach the problem of infant morbidity and mortality related to infections she is exploring the potential of intervening through vaccination of pregnant women to protect the women and their babies against infections. This also includes the evaluation of this intervention in reducing adverse birth outcomes. In child health research, immunological defense and nutritional status cannot be separated. Our observational studies examine how the nutritional "dual burden" impacts infant response to infections and vaccine uptake in resource-limited settings.Addressing childhood morbidity requires looking beyond single-disease endpoints to understand how systemic nutritional gaps compound clinical vulnerability. Integrating nutritional science with vaccination strategies remains a core priority for our clinical teams.Read our research briefs exploring the intersection of diet, immunity, and public health outcomes by visiting wits-vida.org/blog/investigating-south-africas-vitamin-a-dual-burden/#WorldFoodDay #ChildNutrition #Immunity #PublicHealth #WitsVIDA ...

Exciting breakthrough for global child health and public immunization programs! 🌍💉A new study led by the Wits Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit (Wits VIDA) has provided groundbreaking evidence that a reduced-dose "1+1" vaccination schedule for the PCV13 vaccine sustains strong immune protection in children through five years of age. This is the first trial to evaluate long-term antibody persistence up to age five under a reduced-dose regimen. The findings show that a single infant priming dose combined with a timely booster offers protection comparable to the standard, multi-dose series. Why this matters for global health:👉 Lasting Protection: Children maintain robust immunity throughout early childhood.👉 Cost & Resource Efficiency: Fewer primary doses mean lower procurement and administration costs, easing the pressure on busy routine immunization schedules.👉 Future Sustainability: Savings can help low- and middle-income countries create fiscal space to introduce newer, broader-coverage vaccines. This research successfully addresses a critical global data gap previously highlighted by the World Health Organization. Read the full article to explore how this study could reshape future immunization strategies: wits-vida.org/press-release/reduced-dose-pcv13-vaccination-schedule-protection-lasting-through-ch...#GlobalHealth #PublicHealth #VaccineResearch #WitsVIDA #ChildHealth #Immunization Wits Health Sciences ...
