Nurturing the Next Generation of African Scientists

At Wits VIDA, we believe that science is not only about discovery — it is also about developing people. As one of Africa’s leading vaccine and infectious disease research units, we are committed to building the next generation of scientists, clinicians, and public health leaders.

Through academic training, mentorship, and supervision, VIDA offers opportunities for postgraduate students and early-career researchers to grow within a world-class research environment. Our academic pathways include:

  • Postgraduate supervision: Masters and PhD candidates conduct research across VIDA’s focus areas, from maternal and infant health to antimicrobial resistance and respiratory pathogens.

  • Postdoctoral fellowships: Advanced training opportunities for emerging scientists to deepen expertise and build independent research careers.

  • Mentorship and capacity building: Structured guidance in scientific writing, grant applications, data analysis, and leadership skills.

  • Collaborations and networks: Access to international partnerships, multi-country studies, and platforms for presenting and publishing research.

By embedding academic growth into our mission, VIDA not only produces high-impact science but also ensures that African-led research continues to thrive for generations to come.
