During this month, we learned about RSV - let's recap!🦠Respiratory syncytial virus [RSV] is a virus that infects the respiratory tract, including the lungs. 🦠RSV season starts in February in South Africa and continues through autumn and winter. As we continue to raise awareness around RSV, let's look at limiting the spread of the virus. RSV and influenza are respiratory viruses, like COVID-19, so we can follow the same preventive measures to prevent the spread of these viruses. Here's a reminder:☑️Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.☑️Keep your hands away from your face, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.☑️Avoid close contact with sick people, kissing, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who have cold-like symptoms.☑️Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the trash afterwards.☑️ Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that people frequently touch, such as toys, doorknobs, and mobile devices.☑️ Stay home when you are sick, stay away from work, school, and public areas. This month, we are raising awareness around RSV. RSV season starts in February in South Africa, and it's essential to recognize the symptoms of RSV and take preventive measures to avoid infection and protect yourself and your loved ones.Infants who contract an RSV infection almost always display symptoms. This contrasts with adults who may sometimes get infected by RSV without showing any symptoms. Initially, RSV may present itself mildly, but it can worsen after a few days. In infants, the symptoms of RSV infection may runny nose, cough, fever, irritability, decreased appetite, and decreased activity. As the illness progresses, the cough may develop into wheezing or difficulty breathing. It is important to get medical assistance early on, especially for at-risk groups such as preterm babies or those with underlying heart or lung diseases.
